Sadie

When I look into Sadie's beautiful eyes, it is hard for me to believe that someone could just throw her away. Someone did just that and Sadie would have died without ever having a home of her own if we had not found her on the PBRC website. Although she was in a no-kill shelter, they had almost given up on finding her a home and she was to go to a regular shelter the very next week.

I almost did not inquire about her because she had lived in a shelter so long. I thought there must be some reason that no one had adopted her. Something about that picture of the sad little dog sitting in the snow kept drawing me back and I finally just had to find out more about her. I am so glad I did!

Sadie

Sadie has added so much to our family. She loves everyone and never gets tired of being petted and cuddled. She is very smart and when I took her to obedience classes she was the best in her class. She is quite athletic and can run like a greyhound! She can be mischievous and has a silly sense of humor. She is the best!

Sadie's favorite activity

Sadie is a natural swimmer. She has no fear and just plunges in! So, here is Sadie swimming.

Silly Sadie

This picture was taken just after she got here and she was feeling a bit strange about new comforts like quilts. Plus she had no idea what I was about to do with that camera!

You can bet she understands about quilts now -- not to mention beds and couches.

She adjusted very quickly to her new home and now it seems like she has been here forever."

Sadie gets many compliments on how pretty she is. She is a 'blue-nose' with a beautiful blue and fawn brindle coat. She has a white heart on her chest!"

With Her new "brother" Caesar

Caesar also comes from a shelter. We adopted him a few months before Sadie.

Sadie's new life

Finally, here is a picture of her at her favorite place (the nature trail where she and Caesar run and swim). This picture represents Sadie's new life, after 10 months of shelter life!"

Thank you to Veronique and the PBRC. Thank you also to Brenda and Jann, who took such good care of Sadie at the shelter and then drove several hundred miles to bring her to us.

This article was written by Sadie's rescuers. It tells her story from their perspective. I still remember clearly the moment I sent that email asking about Sadie. I remember waiting anxiously all weekend for a reply. I saved that reply which begins "So you want to know more about our little lady, Sadie. She is so sweet, where do I start?"

  Sadie's Story - A Story of Hope

Sadie came to us when she was just four months old. Her name back then was Petunia but was later changed to Sadie, which we felt was more fitting. Sadie was such a sweet, loving pup always eager to cuddle and play.

Sadie is of a breed of dogs which has several names, one of which is commonly known as "Pit Bull." This alone has made it very difficult to find a good home for Sadie. Day after day, week after week, and month after month, the volunteers tried everything to find a good home for Sadie. Many people were interested in Sadie until they found out her breed. There has been so much negative publicity about the breed, that it is understandable why some people would feel uncomfortable adopting one.

"Poor Sadie, she doesn't even know she is a Pit Bull. She is so gentle and loving."

In March, we decided to try other methods of finding a home for Sadie. One of our volunteers started calling every Pit Bull rescue site she could find on the Internet. She finally found one that agreed to advertise Sadie for no charge. After a month, she received two responses. When she wrote to the interested parties asking for more information about them and references, she never heard back from them. Time was running out for Sadie.

After having Sadie in our possession for more than 10 months, it was decided that we would have to send Sadie to a shelter and see if she could get adopted from there. The decision was heartbreaking because there is always a possibility of the dog being destroyed if a home is not found, but we had to make the decision. We did not want to turn away dogs that needed our help that were never given any chance whatsoever at adoption.

On Friday, April lOth, we set the date of April 17th to take Sadie to another facility. It was difficult to sleep that weekend. All we could think of was Sadie. One volunteer, consoling another about the situation, said that they just had to put Sadie's fate into God's hands. Little did they know that at that moment, a woman in Michigan was writing to them via e-mail asking if Sadie was still available for adoption! On Monday, April 13th, the volunteer who had advertised Sadie on the Internet checked her e-mail and discovered the message from the woman, Mary, in Michigan. She knew in her heart that Mary was going to be the person to adopt Sadie and called the other volunteers involved with Sadie.

Over the next week, there was much correspondence between the volunteers and Mary; references were checked, vets were called and a video of Sadie was made and sent to Mary and her husband, Rich, so that they could see her real personality; arrangements were made - Sadie was going to Michigan!

It was official! On Saturday, April 25, 1998, Sadie found a real home of her own. Two volunteers drove her four hours to her new home in Michigan where her new family was eagerly awaiting her arrival. Things could not have worked out better. The weather was beautiful that day. Sadie rode wonderfully in the car. She laid quietly in the backseat the entire ride! The volunteers did not get lost once! Sadie's new owners fell instantly in love with her and she with them. Sadie made a new best friend too, Mary's other dog, Caesar. It was like a dream come true for the volunteers and most of all, for Sadie.

We will miss our little Sadie girl, but we are thrilled she got a GREAT home at long last. Mary and Rich update us frequently. Sadie has fit into their home and lifestyle beautifully.
