FOSTER
HOMES NEEDED!
Foster homes
are always desperately needed. Puppies always need fostering,
as kennel life is not appropriate for a pup. Adult dogs will
often need fostering also, as kennel life can be stressful,
particularly if it is long term. Certain dogs will not thrive
in a kennel.
Perhaps
you are not ready to commit to owning a dog just yet, or perhaps
you have a week or two available that you would be willing to
devote to a puppy or adult dog in an emergency. Fostering can
last from a few weeks, to a few months. What do you need to
do to be a foster home?
- A foster
home is one that meets certain basic requirements for keeping
dogs safely contained, and can provide a nurturing environment.
- Veterinarian
and personal references are required, as is a home visit.
- A foster
agreement must be signed, stating that the dog remains the
property of Midwest Rescue, and all costs (food, vet bills,
etc.)are paid by Midwest Rescue.
- Fosters
must be willing to transport puppies/dogs for vet visits,
as required.
- Fosters
must be willing to either transport puppies/dogs to pet stores
on weekends for shows, or be available for pick-up/drop off
at specified times.
- Fostering
puppies up to 4 months of age - Someone must be home at all
times. In an ideal situation, children 6 years and older will
also be present in the home to provide the both the puppies
and the children opportunities for positive interaction.
- Fostering
puppies 4 - 5 months of age - Puppies can hold their urine
for about one hour for every month they are old. Therefore,
they cannot be left alone for more than 4 - 5 hours. Ideally,
children 6 years and older will also be present in the home
to provide the both the puppies and the children opportunities
for positive interaction.
- Fostering
puppies over 5 months of age/ young adult/adult dogs - Puppies
over 5 months of age are often viewed by other dogs in the
home as young adults. Therefore, adult rules apply, foster
dogs can only be placed with one dog of the opposite sex,
or as an only dog.
Fostering
a puppy/dog is very time intensive and requires a very close
focus which can be more work than you originally anticipate.
However, it can also be a very rewarding experience, and make
all the difference in the world in getting a dog off to a good
start, or helping an adult dog make a peaceful transition to
their forever home.
