A pit bull is not one breed of dog. It includes American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT), American Staffordshire Terriers (AST), Staffordshire Bull Terriers and all mixes that include one of these breeds.
Pit bulls are dogs that love to be with people. They are comedians and make you laugh. They love to play games of fetch, or they love to just sit quiet and cuddle. They are also terriers, and terriers are known for their determination. Pit bulls are strong and have lots of energy. This makes them great at lots of activities such as agility, search and rescue, therapy, obedience, drug detection and lots of other things.
Pit bulls are muscular with short hair. They come in all colors and a wide range of sizes. Their ears can be natural, which is when they are slightly floppy or sticking straight up. They can also be cropped, which is when they are cut very short.
Many dogs have jobs. For example, Labrador Retrievers retrieve and Border Collies herd sheep. People breed dogs for certain jobs. Pit bulls were originally bred to work as bull-baiting dogs in England. Later on, they were bred to fight in a ring with other dogs. Because of these traits, pit bulls may fight with other dogs, which is why they are usually best as the only pet.
Animals also have traits that aren’t bred into them. These are called instincts. In the wild, animals have to hunt for their food, which is often smaller, weaker animals called prey. The desire or instinct to hunt and catch prey is called prey drive. Many pit bulls have a very strong prey drive, which may lead them to chase small animals. Because they are strong and determined, pit bulls may hurt these animals.
Overall, the Pit Bull is an affectionate and stable family pet. Pit Bulls need caring, smart and responsible people owners to keep them safe from harm.
